The Art of Capoeira In-Person

This two-part event will explore the history of capoeira, its key elements, and how it has influenced the world. Capoeira is a 600+ year-old Afro-Brazilian art that blurs the line between martial art and dance. It has gone from an illegal martial art to grow in popularity to become Brazil’s national sport, Once only played by slaves and their descendants, capoeira is now for everyone, young and old, rich or poor, short or tall. It brings about energy that makes the players, the musicians, and even the spectators part of the game. Each night will start with a discussion about the basics of capoeira and finish with some movement. Make sure you have about 5-6 feet of space to move around! Please register below.

This program is part of a series highlighting participants of In This Moment: Revolution Reckoning Reparation, a project for ten teams of Black writers and photographers to profile ten Black leaders from across the city of Rochester published by Visual Studies Workshop. The project demonstrates the breadth and scope of revolutionary work happening in the area. This library series is co-sponsored by the Monroe County Library System and the Rochester Public Library.
