The Best Kept Secret in Aviation In-Person
Sailplanes, commonly referred to as "gliders," have been leading technology in aviation even 100 years before the Wright Brothers first flight in 1903. “Soaring” is the art of flying these amazing and elegant machines over hundreds of miles, powered only by the sun. This presentation, led by Cy Kastner, a board member of Finger Lakes Soaring, introduces people to the sport of soaring, the technical design of sailplanes, the physics of flying motorless airplanes, and, the dynamics of weather that enable sailplanes to fly thousands of miles without an engine.
"Soaring is the 'Best Kept Secret in Aviation,'" says Kastner, a retired aerospace engineer who is FAA certified in multiple fields. "These airplanes are on the cutting edge of technology. We at Finger Lakes Soaring have been flying for years with designs that are just now entering into general aviation. Soaring is available to almost everyone, and is the easiest and least expensive gateway opportunity for anyone interested in experiencing the joys of flight."
