Boater Safety Course Part 1 In-Person
All motorboat and personal watercraft operators, regardless of age, will need a boating safety certificate beginning in 2025.
This 8-hour course is an introduction to the basic principles of safe and responsible boating. Students successfully completing this course earn a safe boating certificate. Students must attend both 4 hour sessions of the course and must pass a multiple choice test at its conclusion. The other session will be held on Saturday, 2/15 from 12-4 pm. Participants must be at least 10 years old to enroll.
Textbooks are provided.
The course covers basic boating skills and encourages common sense and courtesy to all who share the water. Topics covered include rules of the nautical road, required safety equipment, special boating related activities, how to avoid emergencies and what to do should an emergency occur.
There is a $40 per person fee payable at the start of class by cash or check.
If you are 18 years of age or older, there is a $10.00 fee for your permanent boating safety certificate, payable to New York State Parks once you’ve passed the course. The $10 fee is waived for students under 18.
Your instructors, Captains Lynda Fisher and John Johnston are USCG licensed captains and certified National Safe Boating Council on-the-water instructors, with extensive experience teaching and coaching recreational boaters.
